While completing her Master of Counselling at Victoria University (VU), Laura spent a six-month placement as a student counsellor at Refuge of Hope – a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting Latin American immigrants, refugees and international students living in Melbourne.
“It was a fantastic opportunity to help the Latin American community living in Melbourne"
“Another thing that is also extremely important in the industry is having the endorsement of a professional body. In my case, after I graduated, I qualified for membership with the Australian Counselling Association which is another door the degree opens for graduates."
“All of the theoretical learning for Bachelor of Midwifery/Bachelor of Nursing at VU is followed by clinical placements to expose students to potential future workplaces. So I could consolidate my learning and develop the necessary practical skills – a very important step in the process.
"During placement, the employers get to know you and watch your development. You are already a familiar face to them by the time you are applying for positions.
"Balancing work and study has its challenges, and I was fortunate to have the support of VU and my family network.”
I first came to Australia from Colombia to study English and I fell in love with Melbourne. So I decided to follow my passion and study a Master of International Community Development.
During my degree, VU helped me find my placement in the social enterprise sector.
In fact, during my placement, my supervisor was looking for someone to work as a research assistant in a social cohesion project. So even before graduating, I was working in the community development field in a very exciting project that allowed me to learn.
“I study a Bachelor of Education (P-12) at VU. I absolutely love my course – it caters for my interests and learning style as it is very immersive and collaborative. I studied at a different university prior to VU, but after switching I soon discovered that the VU Block Model® helped me immensely when working while studying.
“It also keeps me engaged with relevant and up-to-date content, invaluable lecturers, and like-minded peers. This helps me expand my education and network in the west for future career opportunities.”
