ECU embraced my interests and writing my thesis solidified my reputation. I see that as a huge catalyst for where I am now. It has absolutely been the pinnacle of my career so far.
Instead of listening to lectures and undertaking exams, we were encouraged to change the way we thought, something that has had a lasting impression on me, and which has ultimately shaped the way I conduct myself in the workplace. I absolutely came out of the course a different person.
I specialise in murals, so skills such as mapping large scale theatre backdrops, proportional drawing, sculpture and scenic finishes, have all helped me practically but have also aided my development as an artist
Throughout my three years at [Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts at ACU] I’ve learnt numerous techniques that have helped in my professional life as a freelance visual artist.
When I first chose ECU [then WACAE] back in 1988, it definitely had the best reputation for education. Mostly it was the practical nature of the ECU degree that I just loved. The lecturers I had were doing real life stuff – they weren’t just standing up there saying ‘here is the theory’ and then going back into their office to read more.
They are truly involved in the community, which I love, because if you’re going to teach and preach something, I think you should actually know that it works.
